Ornamental shrubs

Ornamental shrubs are an incredibly diverse group of plants that play a key role in the structure and aesthetics of every garden in Poland. They offer a wealth of forms, leaf and flower colors, as well as a variety of flowering dates, thanks to which they can decorate the garden throughout the season. Their versatility means that they can be used as solitaires, flowerbed elements, hedges, and groundcovers.

In Poland, due to our climatic conditions, many species and varieties of ornamental shrubs do well. Here are some popular and noteworthy suggestions:

Rhododendrons and Azaleas: Valued for their spectacular, large flowers in a wide range of colors, blooming in spring and early summer. They prefer acidic soil and semi-shady positions, which can be provided to them in many regions of Poland. There are many varieties that differ in size, habit, and flower color.
Hydrangea: Very popular due to their large, spherical or conical inflorescences, which can have different colors depending on the variety and soil pH. In Poland, garden hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), bouquet hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) and shrubby hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) grow well, as well as climbing hydrangeas (Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris).
Forsythia: One of the first shrubs to welcome spring with bright yellow flowers, appearing even before the leaves develop. They are easy to grow and tolerate various climatic conditions in Poland well.
Lilacs (Syringa): They delight with their intense scent and beautiful inflorescences in shades of purple, pink and white, blooming in spring. They are relatively undemanding and grow well in the Polish climate.
Viburnum: This is a diverse group of shrubs, valued for their decorative flowers (often fragrant), decorative fruit and beautiful autumn leaf colouring. Many species and varieties winter well in Poland.
Barberries (Berberis): Popular for their colourful leaves (in shades of red, yellow, green), small flowers and decorative fruit. They are resistant to drought and pollution, and many varieties tolerate Polish winters well.
Spiraea: This is a large group of shrubs with different habit, flowering time and flower colour. Some bloom in spring (white), others in summer (pink). They are generally easy to grow and winter well in Poland.
Weigela: Valued for the abundant flowering of bell-shaped flowers in spring and summer. Varieties with pink, red and white flowers and colourful leaves are available. Dogwood (Cornus): Some species and varieties of dogwood are valued for their decorative shoots, which take on intense colors in winter (red, yellow, orange), as well as for their decorative leaves and fruit. They are frost-resistant and grow well in Poland.

Physocarpus opulifolius: Popular for their decorative leaves (in shades of green, yellow, red, and purple) and decorative inflorescences and fruit. They are easy to grow and tolerate Polish climate conditions well.

When choosing ornamental shrubs for your garden in Poland, it is worth considering:

Frost resistance: Make sure that the selected species and variety are fully resistant to Polish winters.

Soil and site requirements: Each shrub has its own preferences regarding soil type, moisture and pH, as well as sunlight.

Blooming time: By choosing shrubs with different flowering times, you can enjoy flowers in your garden throughout the season.
Ornamental Values: Consider the color and shape of the leaves, flowers, fruit, and the shape of the shrub to match your garden vision.

Target Size: Make sure the shrub you choose will be the right size for the space you plan to plant it in.

Careful selection of ornamental shrubs will allow you to create a beautiful, colorful, and interesting garden that will please the eye for many seasons.

Evergreen shrubs

Evergreen shrubs are a valuable element of every garden in Poland, as they retain their leaves all year round, providing green structure and colour even on frosty winter days. They are not only decorative, but can also act as a screen, create hedges or provide a background for other plants. By choosing the right species and varieties, you can enjoy their charm all year round, regardless of the season.

Here are some popular evergreen shrubs that work well in the Polish climate:

Evergreen Rhododendrons: Many species and varieties of rhododendrons retain their leaves through the winter. They offer beautiful, large flowers in spring and early summer and are an elegant evergreen accent in the garden. They prefer acidic soil and semi-shady locations, which can be provided in many regions of Poland. It is worth choosing varieties with proven frost resistance.
Hollies (Ilex): This is a group of shrubs with decorative, often prickly leaves and red (less often yellow or black) fruit that persist in winter. There are both male varieties (producing pollen) and female varieties (setting fruit if a male grows nearby). Some hollies are more sensitive to frost, so it is worth choosing varieties with good frost resistance in Poland. An example is Meserve’s holly (Ilex × meserveae) and its varieties.
Boxwoods (Buxus): These are popular evergreen shrubs with small, leathery leaves, ideal for shaped hedges and borders. They are relatively frost-resistant and tolerate pruning well. Buxus sempervirens is the most commonly cultivated species in Poland.
Evergreen Cotoneaster: Some species of cotoneaster, such as creeping cotoneaster (Cotoneaster horizontalis) (semi-evergreen) and trailing cotoneaster (Cotoneaster procumbens), retain their leaves through the winter, especially in milder winters and in sheltered locations. They offer decorative foliage and red berries.
Gaultheria procumbens: This is a low, creeping evergreen shrub with small, glossy leaves and red berries that persist through the winter. It prefers acidic soil and shady or partly shaded locations.
Ajuga reptans: Although often treated as a ground cover, some varieties form dense, evergreen carpets and can be treated as low shrubs. Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor and Vinca major): Evergreen climbers or groundcovers that can be used to cover surfaces or hang from walls.

When choosing evergreen shrubs for your garden in Poland, pay attention to:

Frost resistance: This is a key factor in our climate. Choose species and varieties with proven resistance to low temperatures.

Soil and site requirements: Each shrub has its own preferences regarding soil type, moisture, pH and sunlight.

Target size and shape: Consider what role the shrub is to play in the garden and choose the appropriate shape and size.

Decorative values: In addition to evergreen leaves, many shrubs offer additional attractions, such as flowers or fruit.

Remember that some evergreen shrubs may require winter covering in colder regions of Poland or in the case of very young plants. Careful selection and proper care will ensure that your garden is green and attractive all year round.

Flowering shrubs

Flowering shrubs are one of the most spectacular elements of any garden in Poland, bringing colour, scent and attracting pollinating insects. Thanks to the variety of species and varieties, we can enjoy the flowering of shrubs from early spring to late autumn, creating a dynamic and vibrant landscape.

Here are some popular and noteworthy flowering shrubs that do well in the Polish climate:

Forsythia: As I mentioned, these are one of the first harbingers of spring, covered in bright yellow flowers even before the leaves develop. They are easy to grow and tolerate various climatic conditions in Poland well.
Lilacs (Syringa): Their intense scent and beautiful inflorescences in shades of purple, pink and white are an inseparable element of the spring landscape in Poland. They are relatively undemanding and grow well in our climate.
Filipendula ulmaria: A native species with delicate, creamy-white inflorescences, blooming in summer. It prefers moist locations and is frost resistant.

Weigela: Blooms abundantly with bell-shaped flowers in spring and summer. There are varieties with pink, red and white flowers and colourful leaves, which add to their attractiveness even after flowering.

Spiraea: This is a very large group of shrubs with different flowering times and flower colours. Early spirea (e.g. grey spirea ‘Grefsheim’) blooms abundantly in white in spring, while Japanese spirea (e.g. ‘Little Princess’, ‘Anthony Waterer’) blooms in pink or red in summer.

Hydrangea: Their large, spectacular inflorescences are the decoration of many Polish gardens in summer and autumn. Hydrangea macrophylla offers flowers in shades of pink, purple and blue (depending on soil pH), panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) have conical inflorescences, and shrubby hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) delight with spherical, usually white flowers.
Rhododendrons and Azaleas: They bloom in spring and early summer, offering a wide range of flower colors. Varieties with proven frost resistance grow well in Poland, preferring acidic soil and semi-shady locations.
Viburnum: Many species of viburnum bloom with spectacular flowers in spring (often fragrant), and then decorate themselves with decorative fruit and autumn leaf discoloration. Examples include coral viburnum (Viburnum opulus) or Japanese viburnum (Viburnum plicatum).
Deutzia: Blooms abundantly with small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink and red at the turn of spring and summer. They are relatively easy to grow and winter well in Poland.

Hibiscus syriacus: Blooms in late summer and autumn, offering large, showy flowers in a variety of colours. In colder regions of Poland, young plants may need to be covered for the winter.

When choosing flowering shrubs for your garden in Poland, it is worth considering:

Blooming period: By choosing shrubs that bloom at different times of the year, you will ensure continuity of flowering in the garden.
Flower colour and shape: Choose the colours and forms of flowers that you like the most and that will match your vision of the garden.
Soil and site requirements: Make sure that the selected shrubs will have the right conditions for growth and flowering in your garden.
Frost resistance: Choose species and varieties that are well adapted to the Polish climate.
Target size and shape: Consider how much space you have in your garden and what type of shrub you prefer.

Additional decorative features: Some shrubs also offer decorative leaves, fruit or shoots that are attractive outside of the flowering period.

A carefully selected collection of flowering shrubs will make your garden full of colour and scent for many months of the year.
